Meet the Artist

I’m Rosie Hodson at ‘Only One Like It’ from Hertfordshire in the UK

The love of art and architecture has been woven through the fabric of my life since childhood – from trying to copy my architect father’s wonderfully detailed pen and ink drawings to building cardboard ‘Tudor’ houses to accommodate my numerous cuddly toys!

After 16 years in the teaching profession, bringing my love of art to the classroom, I spent 20 years running my own early years music business, which was brought to an abrupt halt by Covid 19.

During the months of forced unemployment that followed, I discovered the joys of walking in my beautiful village and the surrounding areas, and appreciating the rich heritage of architecture on my doorstep. There was just one vital thing missing – especially on cold days – somewhere to get coffee!

So it was a day of celebration when we walked down to the village high street one day in late May to find the coffee house had reopened for takeaways! Oh ,the joy of that first proper Barista decaf latte after 3 long months! I took a few celebratory photographs, and later on that day, I dug out my dad’s old watercolours and began the painting that would change my life.

The love of art and architecture has been woven through the fabric of my life since childhood – from trying to copy my architect father’s wonderfully detailed pen and ink drawings to building cardboard ‘Tudor’ houses to accommodate my numerous cuddly toys!

I posted a photo of the painting on social media to let people know that coffee was available once more, and to my surprise and delight, I was contacted with requests for prints!

After painting and posting several more local landmarks, I received a request to paint a house portrait…. and ‘Only One Like It’ was born.

Since then my business has continued to grow and develop as I find new ways to make people’s homes look their absolute best! I specialise in painting sunshine and shadow, and reflections in windows or water. I combine my father’s skills in architectural drawing with my mother’s love of vibrant colour to produce highly detailed, colourful house, church and pub portraits.

I love working with my clients to find out the stories around their homes; the particular plants they would like to see in the garden, any animals they would like to appear, or specific details they wish to accentuate. If local, I am happy to visit the client to gather information and take my own photographs; but I am equally able to work from good quality photographs and emailed information.

During 2021 I introduced a new more whimsical style of watercolour paintings on canvases which have proved very popular! See these in my gallery !

I’ve enjoyed painting every one of my paintings, but The Hub will always have a special place in my heart.
